MORTAR BOMB 81 MM ILLUMINATING 2A
It is an illuminating Mortar Ammunition. It is fired from 81mm mortar, smoothbore, muzzle loading weapon. On firing, the gas pressure from the Primary Cartridge and Augmenting Cartridges propel the Bomb. The explosive charge contained in magazine of the fuze ignites the Buster Bag which in turn ignites the star / Candle through hole provided in the metallic disc (Baffle Plate) placed below. Pressure produced due to burning of GP in buster bag pushes the Star Container outwards uniformly. Due to this pressure, the locking pins used for assembly of Body Upper and Body Lower get sheared and two parts of Bomb Body assembly get separated ejecting the container. After some free fall, the parachute opens out and burning star descends at the rate of 4 to 5 m/sec. Star burns in air for 30 to 40 seconds and illuminates an area of about 600 m.
