Ordnance Factory Varangaon (OFV)

OFV was established in 1964 immediately after Chinese aggression mainly for undertaking the manufacture of 7.62mm ammunition to replace 0.303” cartridges which acts the primary ammunition of Indian Army till then. The production started in the year 1965 with the plant & machines received under U.S. aid. After development of Indian National Small Arms System (INSAS) by ARDE, DRDO, two state of the art production lines of capacity 75MRD for manufacturing 5.56x45mm ammunition were commissioned in the year 1999-2000. Today OFV produces varieties of Small Arms Ammunition.

This ammunition is fired from a 70 mm Chamber 12 Bore Gun. This cartridge is an improvement on our existing popular brand “Special” Paper cartridges in so far as their construction and performance characteristics are concerned. The body is made up of high density polyethylene plastic tubes, bi-axially oriented, to withstand higher pressures and achieve higher velocity in place of paper crimson. Shells can be used together with PD or proximity Fuzes.The shells are filled with TNT Special Grade (Set point 80.60 C) in semi-automatic plant by pour filling method.
