पुणे शहर में स्थित AFK की शुरुआत 16 दिसंबर 1869 को ब्रिटिश सरकार की छोटी हथियार बनाने वाली यूनिट के तौर पर हुई थी। गन पाउडर का इस्तेमाल करके गोला-बारूद 
कारतूस का रेगुलर प्रोडक्शन 1872 में शुरू हुआ। 1886 में, कॉर्डाइट (नाइट्रोसेलुलोज और नाइट्रोग्लिसरीन पेस्ट से बना) प्रोपेलेंट का इस्तेमाल करके 0.303" कारतूस का प्रोडक्शन 
शुरू किया गया। 1914 में AFK में प्रोडक्शन सुविधाओं का विस्तार किया गया और एशिया और अफ्रीका में युद्ध की ज़रूरतों को पूरा करने के लिए मरकरी फुलमिनेट, लेड एज़ाइड, 
लेड स्टाइफनेट जैसे अलग-अलग तरह के प्राइमरी एक्सप्लोसिव और कैप, डेटोनेटर, परकशन फ़्यूज़ और अलग-अलग पाइरो-टेक्निक सामान की फिलिंग का काम AFK में शुरू किया गया।

कारतूस SA 12 बोर 70mm “एस्ट्रम”
